Beta .08

Been out of town with my family for Thanksgiving, so I can’t say I spent a huge amount of time on this update, but there’s a few issues I want to make sure I just fixed that have been popping up recently.

Fixes:

– Spiders should behave while off screen now. This issue was especially apparent while kicking spiders off screen to the right into the small platforms by the cannon…

– Falling through slanted platforms while low jumping / kicking.

– Added some speed to the landing, that should stop the landing from the kick from feeling sluggish.

– little stupid platform tweaks like always…

– Juggle the snailshell in the air without it landing or hitting anything 😀

– Finally remembered to add the caching progress bar in there, not a big deal, but I think it’s neat

Well I think the game feels even tighter than before and you should just move on to level/enemy designs. Really I don’t think it can get any better at this point. Also its fun to juggle spiders on my head 😀

  2. DrNeroCF

Thanks, tuendymion. I’ve been doing a lot of level art lately, for a change. There’s a few issues left in the code that I’m going to try and go over, but focus has definitely shifted back to creating assets and pushing development forward.

So, don’t expect many more beta builds (though I am working with one that’s more updated than the last one I posted). To make up for it I’m going to try and start posting pictures and such, showing off the actual game progress.

ok great, but i did find 2 more bugs. *muahahhaah*:P

    1)
standing on the very end of the curved platform (so that FP goes into the ‘side’animation(don’t know how to explain it otherwise:P)). and then pressing down, makes it impossible for you to move left and right. the only way to escape now is to jump. i think palybe it is because you cant ‘hang’ from a curved platform and it might still call that code or something.

    2)
when you get a ‘star’spider and the shell to lie on top of eachother without bumping away and you run into them PF does the kicking motion for the first one you hit and ignores the second one.

well that is wat i found,

    for now!! *muahahahaha* *ahum* 😛

  4. DrNeroCF

styxtwo: yeah, already got everything with the edge animation fixed in the version I’m working with, should probably update the current beta sometime…

@LoneRonin: *MAKES MOAR GAME FOR GREAT JUSTICE*

  5. WJUK

@DrNero: Wait. Are you doing EVERYTHING by yourself? Concept art and everything? If you are then: whoa, that’s pretty awesome. I would have got a team together or something by now for a flash game of this caliber.

@LoneRonin: That comment was really beneficial. Hell, I think that comment alone helped reduce CO2 emissions by over 256%. Good work. /sarcasm

  6. truendymion

@foodmansam: Its pretty hard to get a team together unless yur throwing money at them. Even then they still flake out on you.

  7. truendymion

hmm maybe instead jumping up after sliding into something he should just roll backwards so he’s not so vulnerable… I’m just wondering what would happen if there were a bunch of enemies clustered together.

  8. DrNeroCF

Yep, its just me working on the game, beside the cameo levels of course. So definitely, the game would have came out quite awhile ago if I were working with a team and a, you know, actual budget…

But then again, working on everything by myself gives me pretty much complete control over the project. I’m still adding features, as you guys can see, which is somehow that I doubt I would he able to do if I had to get the consent of a team.

On the bad side, I’ve been working on World 2 for almost 2 years now and have only now made some sort of deadline, muwahaha.

  9. WJUK

Wow, DrNero. I applaud your effort and skill.

I’m just wondering though. How do you pay for all this? Did you win the lottery or something? Or do you have an actual job?

And I agree that working alone tends to be easier and simpler and gives you full control… and you won’t have people bugging you about stuff. Although I would rather have had all of this for a team-mate, since it would mean a lower workload and quicker rate of production.

@2nd comment made: LULZ. HAXXOR. DIS GAME IZ 13371

Well, until last summer, I was making Flash games while in college (for a degree in psychology, go figure). For awhile after I did a dew contract work for addictinggames.com and a few other sites. For now I’m just working on World 2, but still manage to pull a few licensing deals with World 1, and living in the upstairs of your parents house tende to keep living expenses down quite a bit 😉

So no, I didn’t win the lottery, the market for flash games just happens to be doing exceptionally well lately, which is one of the reasons I’m making sure that World 2 ends up being the best game I could possibly make, because I’m hoping to be able to license out World 2 for some time after it’s released. Also, the sponsorship from ArmorGames.com definitely helps…

WJUK said on working alone: “you won’t have people bugging you about stuff”

Read every post on this site, and tell me if he isn’t being bugged.

  12. WJUK

Ah well, when DrNero started the blog he’d know he’ll be bugged.

I personally, probably bug him the most, since I played the first world and was like: ‘COOL! When’s the sequel?!’ And I received no word for ages, I even used that game as inspiration for media studies/games studies.

Then the BETA for World 2 came out and I was ecstatic and was eagerly anticipating the full game… alas, it did not happen. And for months on end I heard nothing, until Ryan (from a certain cbox) pointed me this way. And now here I am.

I don’t care how long it takes DrNero. Just make this game the most fantabolous, awesome flash game to ever grace my monitor.

  13. WJUK

lol, you can use in-game advertising like how DTD does it. That way if other sites embed the flash game you will still receive ad revenue since the advertising is in the game. Win win!

It also depends on how popular your game is (of course).

I’ll explain the relation in a simple formula:
More people play = More money
    More money = Kaching!$$$

  14. WJUK

    lmao @above comment.

Overexaggeration or what. I wouldn’t say ‘millions’ although thousands is possible with a game of this caliber.

And the referring thing, blatant advertising (is it advertising? I can’t think of another word) or what.

  15. styxtwo

hehe yea i felt like advertising myself :P:P.

but still i really think brad can make a lot of money from mochiads (wheter he uses my referring link or not:P). because then he gets a small amount every time some1 sees the ad in his game).
and a lot of people will play his game, so that means a lot of money (maybe not millions:P but yea thousands is definately possible).

  16. DrNeroCF

Heh, looks like I’m a few steps ahead of you guys…

Yes the final game will have mochiads, I actually met those guys when I was in California, really awesome bunch of people. And there will be some ads on tue site, just not, you know, everywhere…

Trust me, I’ve been looking into ways to ‘monetize my games’ for awhile now, since sponsorships are only great for the short term…

  17. NinjaCow

You say that NOW, but when you actually HAVE a good flash game, you’ll feel differently. Don’t you want all of your effort to be rewarded somehow?

  18. DrNeroCF

As long as I’m not limited audiences by outright charging for the game, I’m happy.

And if someone clicks out of the game because there’s an ad while the game is loading anyway, that’s their problem…

  19. styxtwo

yea, but you have a very special marketing position, because FP1 was so big. people (like us) are looking forward to playing the game and they probably won’t mind seeing a few ads before playing the game.

also geting non-exclusive sponsorships will be really easy, because people already know it is going to be popular so they want to pay a lot for it.

  20. NinjaCow

    @ WJUK:
I wouldn’t mind RUNNING a marathon… if it meant that I WOULDN’T have to play the game! I wouldn’t be caught DEAD playing “Fancy Pants World 2”! It would be a complete scandal!

  21. educkface

    @ ninjacow:

I will be expecting a new ninjacow adventure for the release of world 2, you better not disappoint all your fans 😮 The replay value of those games are just amazing.

  22. WJUK

Impressive, I really think you’re going to redefine the whole genre of flash games. Bring them into the next plane of existence… or something.

Screw Mr Fancy Pants, asteroids remixed ftw!

    lol
