I will appreciate your thread bump! Here is some feedback.

-Maybe that monsterly thing should respawn.
-Some different kinds of platforms, maybe? I think some kind of squishy platform would be really cool. Especially to hang off of. Hard to program, though.
-MOAR MONSTERS! Those monsters you have now are pretty cool, but it would be great if there were some that moved.

I can't really talk, though, QSC doesn't do any of that stuff yet either.

A fair few of you have seen this, but I don't mind the way it turned out.
All I used was a shapeFlag hitTest at the players head. (And of course some sprite work form Jesus_Minime)

Well, I really don't have anything more complex than a series of points, it helps that my straight ground and walls is a separate clip from the curvy ground, so I don't have to guess on ambiguous corners. Basically if you're close to a wall, and a point in front of you is touching, but that point minus your jump speed isn't touching, then you'll snap to the wall. If your jump speed is going upwards, then FPM will do the knee hope thing from ME2D.

Instead of doing one point right under another, try one point, then another maybe 2 pixels of leeway, then plus horizontal movement and vertical movement. Basically, it's not touching where you were, it's touching where you're going.

The snap to thing sounds a little inefficient, I guess I like having as little extra set up as possible while making a level, though.

you could have him flip onto the ledge, if he does that, all you need is to have a frame of him curled up, then use _rotation to show him flipping, and just program the character to move up (or down as in flash is reversed) the y axis while moving forward onto he X axis, while slowly gaining momentum. For me this was a BIT easier. XP

Thanks Thefox,

It sounds very similar to the approach i took. Basically checking two points to see if one is in the ground, and one is in the air. It has proven to be quite easy to implement.

I'm about to code the "ledge up" animation (animation of the player going from a ledge grab, to climbing up and then standing on top of the ledge). Some of my first thoughts are "how is the player bounding box going to move as the player animates".

I think my approach will probably something like:

1. gamer presses "up" to crawl up onto the ledge
2. disable input (I don't want people jumping or moving in the middle of this transition)
3. the actual player character bounding box origin will not move, though I will have an animation of the player crawling up on the ledge and standing up
4. once that animation is complete, I instantly move the player bounding box origin to the top of the ledge and then switch the animation to a standing animation.

My main reason for doing that "snapping" method, is because I could see it difficult to animate a player, while I'm moving the players bounding box (would require a lot of back and forth trying to match up the ground and wall as I'm tweening the bounding box).

If anyone else has any other approaches for the animation of a ledge up I'm all ears

Ledge-grabbing isn't too hard to do, you just have to step through it procedurally. Let me step you through how I'd handle ledge-grabbing:

So first of all, at what point do I start checking if the character is hitting a ledge? When he has no movement on the Y-axis, or is moving downwards on the Y-axis.

Alright so now the character is moving downwards and we start checking for the ledges. So when would the character be hitting a ledge? Well, I'd define a ledge being the very end point of a wall. So basically, if you go any further than that, you are not hitting anything at all. So by taking that definition, I'd say a character is hitting a ledge when one of its top corners (where the hands would be) plus a numerical constant is hitting the wall and its top corner minus a numerical constant is not hitting the wall.

Here's the pseudo code:

constant = 5

If character is moving downwards
If its top left or right corner's X + constant and the corner's Y + constant is hitting the wall
If its top left or right corner's X - constant and the corner's Y - constant is NOT hitting the wall
I'm hitting a ledge

Thanks for the responses

I had thought about putting little "ledge grab" boxes on every corner, but it just doesn't feel like the "right way" because you'd have to be putting these little boxes all over your level, and I'd imagine it gets to become a hassle. I know in 3D platforming games that they do not have such "ledge grab" boxes on all the geometry because this would make the level designers life hell. I have a feeling it's all just programed to work through ledge detection, and the state of the player. However it still is a good alternative method to explore if I can't get it to work the procedural way.
