this year, we have three new teachers (math, bio and geo), who stereotyped me as an idiot....for obvious reasons (i don't really have to be paying attention to listen, that strange about me). And yesterday, embarrassed them all in class by rebuking their answers and giving my own, which were completely correct, and in math a gave an easier formula for finding fraction thingys between each other. . Now they all hate me, and they don't really look my direction much in class anymore. or care if i don't do my homework. or my classwork. or any work whatsoever.(w007!)

sometimes, it can be abused though. we see someone who looks a bit different, and just automatically assume that they're "weird" or "different". i find myself sometimes just seeing a kid and brushing him off before even speaking a word to him. the trouble is, outside looks can be really deceiving. when you talk to people on a forum like this, you get to know more about how a person really is, and who they are, without having to put up some kind of mask to judge them through. (besides avatars )
some of you guys here could be really strange looking on the outside, but since the internet exists, you don't have to worry about me/other people judging your looks and stereotyping you just for the way you look. people have to chance to judge who you are by the way you talk and present yourself. of course, words can be deceiving as well, but that's another story.

It's just human nature to stereotype. It's a defense mechanism. If we think that these people could potentially harm us, we move away, or think different of them, just so we don't get hurt.

Theres one thing I noticed though, my school accepts kids from Boston Mass and they have to take a bus from there daily. Every single one of them has been mean to me. So even though I don't stereo type it's still a bit weird that they are all mean....

Eh, stereotypes are extremely good on the internet when noone cares about who you are

For example, I view tl;dr people as either too intelligent (if it's with proper grammar), or some 12-year-old (if not), emoticon-overusers as 12-year-olds, Capitalizers as too intelligent, etc.

My viewpoints pretty screwed up >_>

(And yes ars, changing your image would be the best thing to do right now )

Im one of thos people who fits into one of those stereotypes but is the complete opposite... lemme explain. Basicly i have my hair dyed jet black and have sorta long hair with quite a long fringe, so those who cant see past looks would straight off call me emo or greb and probably make comments about self harm or something. Funny thing is I'm pretty much the complete opposite of emo, although i do love the colour black and sorta dress like it but as far as personality goes, im just a regular, fun loving guy

Another thing I've have against stereotypes is similar to what Mushy said about first impressions. As me and my dad usually have conversations about my future career and stuff like that he said that it would be a good idea to change my image as if i walked in for an interview they would straight away be against giving me the job even if my qualifications were fantastic... im sorry about ranting but that is just bad. But hey I'm a strong willed person so it doesnt bother me much

Of course, stereotyping in real life is bad. And it can usually give the wrong impression about somewhere. I'd like to say that as a society we've moved past it, but we haven't. Not at all.

Stereotypes are used in film/media because it's the quickest way to set up a (sort of) back story for someone without having a long-winded origin story. It's like you see a person that looks like a Hells Angel, you automatically associate many things about them and the writer uses this to their advantage.
