The numpad control isn't really necessary though. 1, 3 and 7 reset the camera to designated points, and 4, 6, 2 and 8 move it around, but you can also use the middle mouse button drag, although that doesn't give you a very good control.

Eh, I can use middle-mouse control.
I think it's a bit inconvenient if you want to get to a certain angle, and then go back. You usually end up with the ground going from the bottom left to the top right.
That's why I just set the camera to a fixed point (one of the axises) and then use the numpad for a bit of perspective.
For a 3D program, camera-control is really important.
And Blender's isn't that good. Not that it's completely unusable though.
It's free, you can't ask anything more than that.

That's debatable, it's probably because the camera is so far away. So it looks realistic.
I'm pretty sure they used ray-tracing too.
