This is not a new idea, some university students from Colorado (I think) had the same thing several years ago. This may even be a spin-off of that.
but its Google, Google has both the money and the resources to make this a reality.
True, funding makes the difference.
Although you won't see this in the consumer sector anytime soon, I think.
I can imagine a malfunction could be deadly, unless there was a big red "lets override the compy!" button. I would nt like hackers to upload their own software XD

Software like this should be hack-proof.
Ideally, you would want the 'cars' to be simple nodes. Basically a client to a main database server that will ensure they can chart correct paths etc. But that would be a final iteration of what we're seeing now (which is the very first steps).
But if cars like this ever make it to the consumer market, they would have to be hack-proof pretty much. And a manual over-ride would be necessary (for at least the first few years, until it gains mass acceptance).
