You may or may not have heard of this issue, but due to government classification rules, Australia has no 18+ rating for video games. The R18+ rating only applies to TV and movies.

Of course I'm Australian, and I'd also like Sedition to have a post.
Although we've discussed this issue before I thought It deserved its own thread.
Although Im underaged I still think that the suppression of adult video games is gonna be a pain in the anatomy when I grow up.

According to statistics, the average gamers age in Australia is 30. If the average gamers age is 30, then why arent R rated video games allowed?
Plus If you're such a bad parent that you allow your kids to play R rated videogames, then you shouldnt be allowed near any children.
Come on Michael, isnt it time Australia grew up.

But I think you're right about all that. 18+ is of course 18+. Not 1000+. And Australia grew up on criminals. So it's really odd that those games are not allowed. (Think if Australia grew up on some new religion instead).

The 18+ rule of Australia kinda encourages pirating. As being a pirate might be the only help. 18+ games don't really need to be more then swears and slight violence. And it's really odd to ban those games.

And seriously, the worst thing that could happen is... Nothing. At. All.

I honestly think that the government cares so much about this crap because they stink when it comes to world affairs. Like the US, we have no idea what were doing! And then theres so much crap about video games,

"Oh my god San Andreas has a mod were they have sex clothed! We have to overact because toddlers are going to be playing this game because there parent's are stupid and will let them buy this game"

The parents should be the ones controlling there kids, not the gov't.

You know, I read so much on NotAlwaysRight.com about parents buying San Andreas for their children. It's pretty wicked actually. Especially when they're trying to fool the cashier.

It'll slowly get better with time. You guys haven't experienced it but in the generation before, there was a large ruckus about films being a bad influence on children etc.

That being said, the world back then was very different to nowadays (yes, I'm looking at you: Internet).

As for banning 18+ games, as a gamer myself it sounds like an absurd thing to do. But not unheard of. People are still trying to fight it now and more power to them!

Movies are pretty bad actually. But news are worse. The complete media thing-a-jicker is totally ruining the world. I know. I've seen.

Actually, I'd like to say that the main problem is the media. But it's not. The main problem is the people who believe in the media. All what they say and in their ways of misleading us.

You make good points.

The thing is, most people believe the news to be infallible but it just isn't. Propaganda is entirely possible, a good example would be WW2 where news was heavily monitored to ensure there wasn't much war weariness.
That being said, the same thing would practically be impossible now with the internet.

Generation before, is that my generation or the generation beforehand? Who knows . . .

I remember when Mortal Kombat was a big deal because it was one of the first games with blood. I remember my mom having a huge issue with it so we simply resorted to playing Street Fighter. I think in some ways having a strict monitoring system is a good thing otherwise you have so many people pushing the envelope that you could eventually descend into video games becoming another outlet for the porn industry. With movie ratings a lot of the things that would get you a R rating when I was a kid are now allowed in PG movies. As this kind of thing progresses the strictness level gets pushed back on what is considering controversial.

Personally, I am annoyed when people push the envelope so much that the entire video games is basically trying to smack the "man" in the face and there is no depth to it whatsoever.

I don't really like the whole "We know what's best for you" attitude from governments' though. I guess I'm a bit torn on the issue.

That was a weird rant so let me know if any of that made sense.

The only problem with using the internet for information is that so much information is false / modified. I don't really trust WikiPedia anymore. 'cause it's just to easy to edit the information.

Though, there are some information sources that are still un-corrupted. Though, I'm not mentioning them.

@FO: I'm pretty sure you're still pretty much our generation. I remember the MK fiasco, it's crazy to think how far the industry has come from those days. The problem I see now, and you seemed to have mentioned in a somewhat roundabout way, is how games are selling themselves one being violent exclusively. I'm thinking ManHunt etc. When a game is just blood and gore and nothing else, that's not fun to play.

@DS: True. Never trust the internet for anything. Double-check your sources. But even then, that might not help since they may have got the information from the same place. In Academia, the use of Wikipedia is generally frowned upon. As you enter College\University, you'll find that they discourage you from using Wikipedia as references. You can use it as a starting point, but definitely not as citation material.

I am not allowed to use wiki since 6th grade. However I do use the citations from wiki! Muahhahahaha!

Yeah, Wiki is a good place for finding sources, just not to use as a source. That's what all my teachers say.

yeah, the media in general is getting pretty screwed up, i mean, even walking through the video store without seeing something pornographic has become a real chore. the majority of movies now a' day seem to be either R-rated or UN-rated... its sad....
thats why Pixar is amazing, most family friendly studio ever. i'll invest in them someday... when i have money...
