It's called parallax scrolling. Anyways it is simple.
if(!_root.wall.hitTest(_x-_root.player._width/2,_y,true)&&!_root.wall.hitTest(_x-_root.player._width/2,_y,true)){//if he's not touching wall on both sides of player
this._x -= _root.player.speedvariable/4//_x - player's speed variable/4
}
if he is not touching wall on either left or right sides, his _x -= player's speed variable divided by 4 ; but of course, it can easily be translated to as3 if your game is made in as3.

yep. it goes straight through the wall. the code i gave you perfectly works. the problem is that the background with the parallax scrolling moves when i hit the wall and continue to move..

that's my parallax code. i patterned it to what redligot gave me haha
why don't you treat your parallaxes as separate entities and move each with their own code, might be harder to do but more efficient. observe:
the first background can be par1
the second can be par2
speed var = velocity
rightmove = +velocity
leftmove = -velocity
wall1 = first wal
wall2 = second wall
parspeed = paralax speed variable
so par1 and par2 make up our paralax. the code could have 2 parts.
PART ONE:
if (rightMove == true)
{
par1 += parspeed*2
par2 += parspeed*4
}ELSE{
(leftMove == true)
{
par1 -= parspeed*2
par2 -= parspeed*4;
}
or something like that. 
SECOND PART:
if(_root.char.hitTest(_root.wall1)
{
parspeed = 0
tada.
thats it.
