IIRC it's been the same in every version, you have to start a new world to get the new biome's.

No, in the other versions they just used the new world generator for the new chunks (because of that there were some problems like... snow in the desert), but in 1.2 you have to start a new world to get new biomes!

Actually, jeb just recently updated world managing, to handle generator version and types.
Aka, your old world won't get jungles and it'll most likely keep its original biomes.
Check a 12w04a level.dat file if you don't believe me. Generator version and type should be stated there.

I really wish someone at Mojang would just sit down and fix the things that are wrong, such as:
Better dealing with multiplayer mobs (right now they are spaztastic)
Better dealing with latency
OPTIMIZATION
More multiplayer integration, such as seeing other people breaking blocks, collaborative mining, less minecart glitchesinstead of adding new features all the time.

I remember when they first added minecarts into SMP (it had been around for a while in SSP) and there was an extremely common bug that would bring servers down.
