Definitely go with AS3 next. It has a lot more web potential, as browsers don't seem to like Java. And AS3 is considered to be close to C languages, so there many not be that many differences.
Java is slow but friendly to other systems...
Example Linux.
But flash work's almost every where but sometimes Java is more "all around".
What I know Java does the same thing on every "system" and with that I include cell phones and other small computer's.
(But I not working that much with any of these).
