Spawned from my post on the election about Obama, I figured anything replies dealing directly with race and racism should be posted here.

In short, some of those crazy conservatives downplay Obama's race, pointing out that he's 50-50, so if the man brings you down if you're black, why not just be white?

Is switching races that easy? I had this one friend in high school who one day, for some reason or another, points out that he (my friend) was black. Everyone there, including me, stopped and said, 'wait, you're black? really...?' No seriously, I never actually considered this kid to be black before, and he even had as much as an afro as he could muster under the school's strict hair guidelines. And we're from the south, we're supposed to be the racist ones. Or did we just get too used to black people being around? Or is the only way that I tag people's race is through their personalities? Is that racist?

It's a weird thing to consider, especially since all my work is done over the internet. Would any of you be surprised if I posted a picture and I was black? Is it racist to assume that you can tell a person's color through their writing? What about the way they speak? Their name?

Doodle, sketch, draw, design, fill notebooks with elaborate scenes, funny character designs, and gameplay ideas.

Yeah I'm totally agains racism. I think peaople that are racist are people that cannot realise black people are humans too.
And racism is not a recent problem. It dates from the origins of the man.

Hm, racism is a touchy subject.

Many people think that society nowadays has mostly got rid of racism, but it's still there. I don't get why the colour of your skin or eyes, or maybe even hair has got to have anything to with who you are. Or what you do.

I would expand on this, but I'm running late for class now. And I think you can get the basic gist of it.

*shrug* I personally never really understood racism. Even in times of segregation my parents didn't even know what racism was because they weren't raised to believe they were better then anyone. My father said that when he was younger he played football with people of different ethnic background, he never understood why they had to go to different schools that was just the way it was.
I think probably what promotes the recognition of differences in color is when people separate themselves from certain groups just because of their ethnicity. Like the Asian clubs, or the African American Clubs, it just kind of separates everyone in general. When I was in high school I had several different friends from several different backgrounds and I never paid attention to their skin color. One of them, who I am still really good friends with, I often have discussions with on things that might offend people of a certain race. What's interesting is, she really doesn't care. Things that people say that may offend her particular race or background, she's not offended by. She has the power to be offended, she chooses not to be. She's not really the victimizing type, like the whole "alabama state flag" controversy (because it was the confederate flag), all she knew was it was her state flag and she didn't understand why people are so upset with. What was amazing about her was she hung out with EVERYONE, which was probably one of the things we had in common.
I remember going to one of my friend's parties and being the ONLY white person there, none of us thought it was awkward. In fact, we thought it was hilarious.
Really, as long as people separate themselves from other people of a different race, then yes racism will exist. They are segregating themselves, and people will notice that. And if that particular group attacks something of value of another group claiming it is racist, then yes the accused will be very angry with THAT particular group.
People say things that offend me all the time, sometimes I choose to stand up for myself, sometimes I choose to ignore it. It depends on the context and emotion behind the offensive comment. I also find it kind of funny that white people don't seem to be allowed to cry "racism" because white people are so "privileged". That just annoys me.

I understand what you mean. In our school, I was in a group of friends with different backgrounds. I believe I knew a girl who was partly German, some guy was part Italian and everything. And, of course, I'm Asian. It doesn't affect who were are or what we do. We all get along just fine (better than fine actually).

And about the white person thing: It's true. Over here, we use to have blackboards. But apparently that was "racist" because it was black. So the government changed it to whiteboards. It just makes no sense to me.

For instance, let's say when you're young you see your mother get killed by someone of a particular race, you are probably going to be affected by it psychologically and maybe your feelings towards a certain race are fueled by that particular instance. Sometimes its less on how you are raised and more on experience. I mean some women after a traumatizing experience with a man are turned off of men completely and just HATE them.
Its so weird how that happens. So it is very difficult to completely eliminate racism, but I'll admit that people aren't helping the problem by acting like its some HUGE evil, when really a minority of people are racist. *shrug*

I don't think it's wrong for people to make assumptions about someone before you get to know them. I mean people are always saying "don't judge a book by its cover". Really? EVERYONE makes split second opinions about other people it's impossible not to, and anyone who says they don't is just a self-rightous ass and is lying. It's okay to make these assumptions, but you shouldn't just come out assuming what you think is correct. Wait until you get to know the person to see if you're right.

I have personally found it impossible to be shocked by other peoples personalities anymore. My whole life I've gone to schools where I was the only white kid, grew up in neighborhoods where I was the only white kid. It never really bothered me because because I wasn't raised socially or politicly ignorant. I said nigga with my friends there and they didn't care. However as I've grown I've become annoyed by the word. Black people think they're taking the word back and making it theirs, I think that's just sad. Why would you want that word? I guess it depends where you grow up, like you said the south. Race in the sout isn't a big issue anymore though, Christianity is. I gotta' say though I hate religion. I was watching a documentary on religion on the south and after about an hour of listening to these people praise and preach and try to force their way of life on this nation through political power, I was utterly disgusted. Why can't they just worry about their own lives?

And to FairlyObvious I know what you mean about people of other race "can't be racist". That's complete bull. In a certain setting with certain people, like lets say I'm hangin' out with a group of people and one of them is your typical "angry black man". If I tell a story and describe someone as a "black kid" or "black guy" he's automatically going to get mad. Which is stupid because all I hear out of their mouths when I talk to some of them is stuff like "white boy" this and "white boy" that. The fact is when your describing someone and they are a different race then you you're going to mention that, it's just instinct. Like if I saw an asian kid, that's how I would decribe him to someone, and he would probably describe me to someone as a white kid. The hypocrisy that black people have on the subject is astounding.

For some reason they think we owe them something, like they're a special race. I don't think any race is better then any other race. They keep blaming us for something that a bunch of old ignorant white guys did hundreds of years ago. I'm not responsible for something that people did hundreds of years ago just because they're the same race as me.

I don't see what makes people from different races so different, sure we may have originated from different places. But we're all people. People of Earth.
Just because your skin has more pigment than my skin, that makes us different? What a silly notion.

It's not just the color of skin sometimes, it can be someone with a mental disorder or disease. I mean I was in a shopping cart line with a lady and her daughter, the daughter was obviously autistic, and the daughter began talking to me. She was showing me some DVD she was buying, and I just struck of a conversation with her about the movie, because I'd seen it before. I was kind of shocked when I realized the mother was looking at me with this surprised expression on her face, but when I talked to my mom about it later she said "Well, most people probably ignore her, or aren't very nice to her."
The problem with that fear of difference though is someone has to TELL someone that they are different. Some people may say its impossible to say you are "color blind", but honestly if you are raised that you are the same as EVERYONE then you won't see the differences that are only skin deep, or mental, or any of that.

I'm white. If everyone in my family got killed by black people who supports the republicans, i'd probably hate black people. Though, if everyone in my family got killed by white people that supports the republicans, i'd rather start hating people that supports the republicans than i'd start hating white people.

So, i think fear of what's different is a part of the human mind. Not that it makes it any better. Racism is creepy!

Well yea, people get discriminated upon for all sorts of things (particularly your appearance). It's just sad to think that the "civilised" society is like that.

A friend of mine went to Turkey or somewhere and someone offered him some fruit, he took it and it was delicious (according to him). But he also said that if someone offered him fruit in his home town he wouldn't take it.

I know a story of a man who lost his wallet.
An immigrant from Saoudi-Arabia found it and returned the wallet to the mans home, apologised for not coming earlier and for not being able to speak dutch very well.
The man took his wallet, and called the police, and said the immigrant stole his wallet.
