Another Video

I know that for most of you who visit and post on my site, there wasn’t all that much new info in the guides video, but nonetheless, it still sparked a few questions and discussions.

For all of you who want to know more about the history of The Fancy Pants Adventure, and my commentary on World 1 and 2, I’m planning on making another video tomorrow, something that’s far more in depth, that those of you out there have already got all the pants colors and trophies should enjoy.

I don’t want to get too technical with it, but if there’s anything specific you’d like to know, post questions here. I know this is really short notice, but I’ll still try to go through all the questions I’ve been asked so far, since I haven’t been able to go through all my emails and respond to each one.

My friend Paul Downs will also be in the video, he’s the guy who designed the Penguin (which I turned angry), something like 15 years ago. That should be far better than just having me sitting at the computer mumbling into a microphone alone…

This question doesnt deal with the history of the series but rather the future.. It is a somewhat contraversial question i suppose but some franchises put their main characters through makeovers. Popular console characters like Samus, Link, and even Solid Snake have all gone through their own cosmetic surgeries as the series matured, do you see yourself making adjustments to fancy pants man?

————————————

What is your thought process when you grind out a new fpa ‘episode’.. do you start out by mocking up levels… do you have odds and ends that didnt make the cut in the previous episode that you try to incorporate or gain momentum from? I have no clue if Actionscripters/ Game developers have this problem but as a Flash animator, seeing a brand new blank canvas is so daunting.. like to get that first frame of 23535 frames.. its intimidating and tough to get the ball rolling.

————————————

I asked you something similar in an interview a few months ago but i can recycle it cause now that fpa 2 is out i can just apply it to this one. Ok so FPA World 2 is out, what worked out well… what didnt work out so well/areas you plan to improve upon in the NEXT go round?

2. WJUK

Are there any features that didn’t make it into FPA2 that we don’t know about?

What do you like/hate most in your FPA games?

If you could do FPA all over again from the beginning (don’t run away just yet) what would you change?

@Rob: I won’t be getting Brawl for a while. ๐Ÿ™

3. Nyubis

Sounds good!
please, put in some tips for beginning game designers.
I’m sharpeining an engine wich i made a while ago and could use any tip (doesnt have to be AS, any tip is welcome).

4. WJUK

@ryan: Oooooohhhhhhhh, good one!

I asked him earlier and Brad said he’s trying but I want to know how it’s going!

Btw Brad, if you need help getting it on WiiWare/XBL/PSN than be sure to set up a petition. XD
I’ll be the first (or thereabouts) to sign. ๐Ÿ˜€

5. Jakedanger

I would just like to know….

will you ever have LEVEL EDITING? in the future? maybe?

how did you come up with your character?

thats all for now….

thanks for a great game!!!

6. DrNeroCF

Hey guys, I recorded a bunch of video today (the 5th) but I’m going to do the Q and A over again, so you guys can continue with the questions.

7. Nyubis

A level editor for fpa would be cool!!!
and not too hard to make think.
just make a mc named “dot” and use some script like this:

on(mousekey.down){
duplicatemc.”dot” + i
_x.”dot”+i = _xmouse
_y.”dot”+i = _ymouse

}

and then something as:

if(fpm.hittest”dot”+i){
_y.fpm = _y.”dot + i
}

it would be completely LineRider style!!

8. styxtwo

no a FPA level editor would take away from the general quality of the game. all the funny jokes and all the little subtle things will dissapear when people start making “million squiggles and snails” levels ๐Ÿ™ .

we should instead force brad to make some more levels (6) (thats supposed to be a devil sign, dunno if it works here xD)

9. WJUK

There will be a FPA3!

I WILL IT TO BE SO.

Oh and styxtwo, for the codes you can just highlight and copy and paste the smileys to find out what they are. But here they are anyway:

[evil] [twisted]

Except swap out the [] for :: (either side). And the above smiley (twisted) was done wrong. Instead of a full stop, it should have been a ‘:’. My bad.

10. WJUK

Yes, Wii would be better (and cheaper! for both the dev and the consumer).

@styxtwo: *sigh*

“would the wii controller work with a platformer game?” He asks.

Lemme see, according to Metacritic/Gamerankings the GREATEST PLATFORMING GAME OF ALL TIME IS ON THE WII.

Super Mario Galaxy, if you’re wondering.

It wouldn’t be too hard to incorporate different control schemes too. Like you could have wiimote sideways by itself (ala Super Paper Mario) or Wiimote/Nunchuk combo (Brad, if you need help figuring out controls for that I’ll be happy to help) or Classic controller or Gamecube controller.

AND! If possible it would be pretty awesome if it was possible to use a USB keyboard to play it traditional fancy pants style. XD

FPA on Wii = EPIC WIN

11. WJUK

@styxtwo: *tut tut* We all make mistakes sometimes. Don’t worry. I’m sure I could have said that the 360 wasn’t made for FPS’… ok, maybe not.

I own a Wii (as you can tell) and I enjoy it a lot. I recently got Sin and Punishment and Mario Kart 64 (adding to my 3 other VC games: Sonic 3, Super Mario World, Pokemon Snap). So, yea it’s fun!

I can’t wait for Brawl either, which seems like a long wait now. Although we get Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit in April.

And hopefully… FPA-Wii sometime in 2008! XD
Taxed beta-testing for it! Just send me a prototype copy Brad. ๐Ÿ˜‰

12. DrNeroCF

*hugs Fairly* Get your own! ๐Ÿ˜› Hehe.

But yeah, word was that Red Steel 2 changed devs because the first dev was sucking it big time. Hopefully they didn’t just change devs to put them on a better project and dumped it over to a portable team… I really honestly did enjoy Red Steel, once I could get past the controls. It was a very old-school shooter design, reminded me a lot of No One Lives Forever 2 (which wont play on my Intel mac anymore *grumble grumble*)

From the line up I’ve already seen on WiiWare, I fully believe that games that hit WiiWare will absolutely blow most of the commercial games we’ve seen out of the water. Nintendo is doing a lot to give devs an extremely low risk pipeline for their games. And low risk means games that try new things, and enough of those means we get games that are awesome and set future standards.

Strangely enough, I believe that we’ll be seeing a ton of innovative games coming out for the iPhone come June, Apple is making it even easier for devs to distribute games than anyone I’ve seen so far, and the even more unorthodox control scheme should force devs to become super creative, or fail miserably, heh.

13. WJUK

Damn. Foiled again.

Red Steel 2 will be interesting. If it can be fast-paced action online, with virtually no lag AND swordplay. I will so buy it straight away.

WiiWare will be awesome. It will pave the way for some amazing games (and hopefully FPA on Wii! XD) and if they sell well they may even get transferred to a boxed game! You never know! But it looks like it’ll take a while to reach Europe ๐Ÿ™ again

I also heard that Spore is coming out for the iPhone too, by making use of it’s accelerometer to actually control your creature then using the touch-screen for the editing bit. Can’t wait for the PC version of Spore too, and the Wii version.

14. Nyubis

GROUP HUG !!!!!!!!!!!

*ahem*
sorry, I think I need a bit of affection too…
and I have no gf ๐Ÿ˜ฅ I even never had one.
I’m single for my entire life already!

Anyway, a couple of friends i got owe a wii and say its quite cool for wii sports ‘n stuff, but can’t keep up with 360.
I wouldn’t know, i havent played any of both yet ๐Ÿ™

15. DrNeroCF

Nyubis: Wii Sports and Wario Ware are both nice for parties, but Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Prime 3, and Brawl are all must-haves for any true gamer. Excite Truck, Trauma Center, Strikers, Battalion Wars 2, and Super Paper Mario are all really fun also. Resi4 is a must if you don’t already own it on Gamecube, and Mario Kart Wii could end up great if the multiplayer holds up and they speed up the karts. I still need to pick up Zak & Wiki and No More Heros, ugh. The Virtual Console rocks hardcore unless you, well… own every single good game ever made already…

And remember, it’s better to be single than to have a girlfriend who doesn’t appreciate Smash Bros. ๐Ÿ˜‰

SuitedCriminal: You mean Super Smash Bros. rockin-your-face-off-with-its-awesomeness? ๐Ÿ˜›

Oh yeah, and while Gears of War was definitely fun, it was nothing more than Resident Evil 4 + Halo + steroids, lots and lots of steroids, heh. Don’t know how you can be excited about GoW2 already, though, the only thing’s been confirmed about it is that it’ll feature at least one giant cube of meat, hahaha. Though that water looked liked the awesomely rendered puddles in Halo 3, only massive…

16. WJUK

SSBB will be awesome. Period.

There is no argument to that.

The 360 is nice and all, but the Wii is cheaper, smaller and it has frickin Nintendo first-party games. Everyone knows Nintendo holds the crown for awesome games.

17. DrNeroCF

Bah, the mind control thing can just read if you’re concentrating or not. And now I will make a super serious, technical post about the Wii.

18. SuitedCriminal

i am excited about gears of war 2 because of the kick ass trailer.

seriously, watch it.

when i go on the game, that move is all i am gonna do for ages! ๐Ÿ˜€

and do not ever compare gears of war to halo. i absolutely hate halo. i have halo 3, (my little brother wanted it) and it sucks so badly. Gears is easily the best game. therefore, it owns all other games ๐Ÿ˜€ including the stupid whats-it-called wii game. oh yeah and spore. i mean come on who wants to play god??? not me.

19. WJUK

GoW2 will be a good game. Halo 3 is a good game too. You can’t really deny that. The online is extremely fun, and compared to GoW, I prefer Halo’s online multiplayer.

GoW does not beat SSBB (I think that’s what your trying to say). You can’t really compare them, but if you do: SSBB has a ton more content. It’s probably the game with the highest replayability ever because of it’s gargantuan amount of trophies/stickers and whatnot.

And about Spore: Spore is going to be awesome. I want to play god.

20. DrNeroCF

You mean the Gears of War 2 trailer with all that gameplay and real time graphics in it? Hehehehe.

Halo 2 was terrible, Halo 1 was a lot of fun, Halo 3 is alright but it gets old pretty quick. Halo 1 was the only Halo where you could get a great lan game of CTF. Actually, I’ve never played GoW online, I beat it co-op with my old roommate awhile back, then I bought it myself to play online, but still haven’t to this day, heh. I always liked CoD2 better than Halo 2, CoD3… well we’re not going to talk about that one, but CoD4 is definitely better than Halo 3.

Melee, however, never really got old, you get tired of one character, you start mastering another, if you’re playing with people worse than you, ya just pick a character you suck with.

Heh, don’t worry though, I have a feeling that I’m going to come on here and write about everything I don’t like in Brawl. Lack of voice chat will not be one of them… that’s a plus in my book.

21. WJUK

Halo 1 was awesome. I’ve never played Halo 2. Actually, I occasionally play the Blood Gulch map for Halo: Combat Evolved on the PC. It’s still as fun as ever. And I still own people.

I’ve never played GoW online either, but I spent quite a few hours playing co-op with my sister and thoroughly enjoyed it. More games need local co-op. CoD4 is better than Halo 3, but I would probably prefer Halo 3 online than CoD4, since I just like the Halo formula for multiplayer. It just works if ya know what I mean.

And the stuff about Melee and Brawl is true. Hell, you could probably play Brawl for the rest of your life and not get everything in-game. It has that much replay value.

I dunno about the VoIP bit though, I would like it if it was in for just friends. And one thing I dislike in Brawl: Cloud or Sephiroth isn’t in it! XD

22. Mistercheef

Maybe I could hit a couple of you up on halo 3 if you are brave enough to give me your gamertags. “sigh” I just need to get a wii so i can play ssbb. then I will be eternally happy. Honestly though, that game is probably going to be next-gen.

23. WJUK

WJUK is actually a name passed down through my family throughout the many generations my ancestors have walked this earth. It is not known where it started or when, it’s shrouded in complete mystery. Some say that it was what one of my ancestors shouted when taking down a mammoth; others say it was the magical incarnation needed to overcome Dracula powers so they could slay him…

Ah, what am I saying. It’s just my initials clamped to the front of UK (United Kingdom).

24. WJUK

I would go for iPhone too. But I think it’s over-priced. I like the multi-touch screen and everything, but seriously Apple! Lower the prices on your damn products, some prices are just ridiculous in my eyes.

*cough* MacBook Air */cough*

It’s funny how we pay more for less.

25. WJUK

GoW is coming out in November, so I think that’s ruled out.

I would get a Wii, because:
A) It’s more expensive – hence it’d be easier to get CoD4 later on
B) Fun.
C) Super Smash Bros Brawl
D) Super Mario Galaxy

Not to say CoD4 isn’t awesome (which it is, btw).
