World 3 Report 27

Afraid there’s not much of anything to report for this week. I do have a question, though. Probably have addressed this before, but this will be a little more organized.

    first comment!
I don’t really think FPA has a specific age group, but it’s fun. If I had to pick one, it would lean towards kids.
Will you update the Characters page?

  2. FairlyObvious

@klimtkiller – I dunno . . . my mom is over 30 and she loves playing the game. Granted, she was told about it so she knew to go looking for it . . .
    Hmmm ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. DaxterSpeed

I’d say all anybody who still have their little kiddie in them. (Part of being grown up is to keep that little kid alive…) I see no reason whatsoever to why older people like 80 something, wouldn’t be able to enjoy at least FPA W2.

  4. Frubban

I don’t really think is targeted to any specific age group…

Everyone who is old enough to be able to play a game, but still young enough to not hate everything that has anything to do with computers, would probably like it…

If their IQ is above 4, that is.

  5. WJUK

I’m with what most people say here, FPA tends to have universal appeal. I would say the graphics themselves lean towards children a bit more, although adults can enjoy them too (just because it’s not gritty and photo-realistic doesn’t mean adults can’t enjoy them).

It’s got a special appeal to older gamers too, I think. Those who grew up with the old Sonic & Mario platformer games. The fluidity of the gameplay just shows high production values.

  6. TheKomputerGeek

FPA is a lot like mario…

At first, it looks like its just for kids, around 6-14, but it is actually for everyone.
I know a lot of people play FPA, ages ranging from 7 to 40, but I think its more than that. The graphics may make the game a little more child-ready, but anyone can enjoy them (adults just might not as much since they don’t look that real.

    Thats just my opinion.

  7. mfranzs

In my opinion, anyone who enjoys the platform genre in general will enjoy FPA, regardless of age.

Were you working on late in the game stuff that we can’t see this week?

  8. VideoGuy

I’ve always thought of it like the Mario games. Yes, they’re cartoonish, yes they’re technically for younger people, but anyone can enjoy it. It’s probably not easy for Nintendo to make this, but they do. And I think that’s what you should try for as well.

  9. Batman

The game is great no matter who you are, i never thought about it, but i’m sure kids love the game. I am young adult… in college and what not… and i’ve been showing this game off to my friends with good feedback for a while. so it’s definitely not a kids only thing.
also i’m with klim, the jellyfish was hypnotizing

  10. kstyle

I would have to say that because the humor is so clean and cartoony, the game is sort of like a pixar movie in that even though it seems at first glance that it is targeted to younger kids, you realize that adults enjoy it and lots of teens who are supposed to be too cool for it admit to loving it to. The current style and art seems to be the best way to reach the broadest audience. The sketchy, hand-drawn look supports this feeling.

Also, I have a few suggestions for weeks when you don’t have much to show off. A while back, you had a video about how you defined the collision surfaces. As a programmer trying to make my own flash platformer, I thought it was cool to see some of the same concepts I was working with applied to a fully working game. I really like the behind the scenes stuff, including when you timelapsed an animation of a pirate. I think you mentioned that it is much easier to animate FPM. Maybe you could give us a quick un-timelapsed example of animating him running or something for a few minutes, which would be very cool to watch and learn from.

  11. Merle

Definitely not age limited! May look somewhat childish at first glance, but in my opinion, most games look that way, since, they’re, you know, games. The gameplay is great for all ages, it’s not too easy or too hard. I rather think it’s better for the higher age groups, as I am not sure if a child’s attention span will take him too far into the game. Also, some of the harder stuff, like golf, is the sort of thing older kids would be better at.

  12. BE FANCY

@Merle Yeah i totally agree and think your right about young kids not having the attention span to get to far with the game. I think the game is very well thought out and the art and graphics are very apealing.

  13. ev1ldude

definitely for all age groups even though i have to admit that the graphic is leaning towards a kids game. BTW i think that you should make the game have more interaction with the plot, cuz there wasnt really that much in world 2 (maybe a short cut-scene in between each level just to link them up)

FPA is in my opinion, fits with the age group that goes to Armor Games. Primarily preteens and teenagers, and fewer people on either side of that age group. It’s a bell curve (YAY!). The younger group (as many here have said) would try it out, have difficulty with it, and move on. The older group would see it as a children’s game, and not play it. So, I guess I would say anyone who clicks the link on a hosting game site would at least play it, and many would have lots of fun.

    P.S. World 2 rated 9.1/10 on Armor!

Also, I noticed that the tentacles are moving at the exact same rate, and it is noticeably repetitive, and as said in the crab-making video, you try not to have it do that… I know, it is only a rough animation, but just thought I’d point it out.

I forgot to say somthing about the music. I think the music immediantly seems more kid-oriented than adult, however, after a good minute or to it starts to feel nostalgic, even relaxing to any experienced gamer, no matter how many Nazis you’ve killed or n00bs you’ve pwnd or dogtags you’ve nabbed in your gaming career (if you don’t get the dogtag reference you should go buy Battlefield: Bad Company 2 and knife-kill someone from behind online), even the most hardened gamer with a few years under his belt will start to loosen up after a little while (OK, mebbe more than just a few years, can’t beleave it’s almost 2011 already, man we’ve come a long way, my first true gaming experience was Sonic on the Sega Genises :0 ) and anyone else with a soul will find it has a cute-factor after a while. Not that everyone will love it, but it certanly does sound a wee bit childlike at first listen.

Sorry to double post but I’m on a iPod Touch and it was WAY easier than editing ๐Ÿ™

  16. Sedition

I can’t speak for children, but the game certainly appeals to an older audience… one who grew up playing Sonic and Mario. Such an audience is time poor, so it’s easier to get them to play a 1 hour webgame than a 30 hour console game. They’re (we’re) also LESS concerned with the so-called childish graphics – look at games like vvvvvv ( http://thelettervsixtim.es/ ). There’s a lot of retro stuff these days to appeal to GenX/earlier GenY.

This is probably something worth keeping in mind if you ever go down the route of selling FPA – adults are the ones with the money, adter all.

  17. SPCC

visual: simple, not a game for a sort of guy who
CT: D–> loves being strong in a mean and racist 100king way

playing style: horrible for someone who is
AC: :33 >*totally new to gaming*
    but otherwise
AT: eASY AND SIMPLE TO GET USED TO,

    plotline:
    GC: FOR 4LL AUD13NC3S

  18. Vick

@Wallross: Amen to that, I think the demo alone had more Awesome in it than whole series’ have after a 4 or 5 game span ๐Ÿ™‚

  19. Vick

@VesicalThanatos: I think you hit the nail on the head & I agree the Fancy series (and a majority of games in general) is art, especially after seeing all the work that’s gone on to make World-3 and that’s another reason people of all age groups can enjoy it. Think of Picasso, people of many age groups will go and look at a Picasso painting and enjoy the experience because its a form of expression, much the same as Fancy being enjoyed by many age groups because it’s an expression of Brad’s creativity, not that we rationalize this out but that is a reason why many of us enjoy his games in all probability. Granted not all will enjoy his form of expression, just as I don’t care to stand around and look at a Picasso painting because to me it looks like somebody screwed up whatever they were painting and threw a hissy-fit and splattered the rest of the paint over it, but again, that’s just me.

  20. Kayvex

I think there is no real specific age group, you just need to like platformers (which I personally love).

I dont think that the animation and look is childish at all, when i first played Fancy Pants I was like, “Wow i really like the animation.”

So yeah, whether youre 8 or 42 I think you just have to like platformers ๐Ÿ˜€

  21. hamcheese362

I’m a little late here but i think that it’s for anybody who looks for this kind of stuff on line, but most inportantly, for ANYBODY who’s imagination hasn’t died off. You understand what I’m getting at? like Dr. Seuss for example. If he were still alive, I’m sure he would have enjoyed playing the instalments of FPA. Not donald trump.
To conclude, i think that FPA is very childy. Not chldish because that’s usually a negative term. I say childy because when you’re a child, your imagination is at its best. You do the math.

  22. fancy pants fiend

u gotta be kiddin me the mastermind behind the fancy pants man and the seris is genius has nothing to offer in this video ive kept quiet cause uve been doin good but u hav NOTHING that is rediculous y would u make a video if u hav nothing the gesture is nice but i just watched u talk away 4 minutes of my life u usually hav a lil something but seriously im pissed right now i played fpm 1 and it was ok fpm 2 and it was GREAT!!!! but i dont get this help me out if u can anyone please explain to me y anyone in their right mind whould talk through a whole video without anything to show the “fans” thisis ridiculous

  23. Aubrey

dedo. or is it dido? I like knowing what’s going on and giving out my opinion. it’s better to waste your time on FPA than just sitting in front of a computer for 4 min.

  24. Vick

@fancy pants fiend: Seriously? If this isn’t some sarcastic humor (if it is, just remember that sarcasm doesn’t translate well for text online), take it elsewhere.

  25. hamcheese362

@fpf: oh look at you using big words. are you proud of yourself? you make a damn game. and while you’re at it, learn to spell.

  26. FFA

Wow.. couldn’t log into my other account. It’s kind of hard to find a certain age group considering everybody now days has different interests.

    EDIT works ๐Ÿ˜›
    ello, hamcheese xD

  27. BE FANCY

@Reef Hey i’m 13 and i like it so.. yeah i went there! ๐Ÿ˜€ lolz it’s not just for 9-12. ANyone can be interested in the awesomeness of Fancypants. Platformers aren’t just for kids, especially ones with this much thought and effort put into it.

Yes, i too can’t wait for world 3 too come out. SO EXCITIED!!

  28. VesicalThanatos

Wow, being the least content-heavy video you’ve ever posted, Brad, this report has garnered some massive conversation. It seems that the sensus generally falls to a standstill, with most people simply stating that it is open for most audiences to enjoy.

However, I find X2ander’s opinion intriguing. I hadn’t thought of it, but I suppose I agree. The gameplay is relatively simplistic yet challenging and addicting, so I do suppose it really draws in the crowd that sits bored in a highschool auditorium and decides to whip out their iPhones and whittle away the time playing simplistic video games. Its content heavy and replayable, but with enough of a conclusion to keep people striving for the next step by awarding them for there accomplishments. Very interesting point.

  29. FFA

Another thing (not sure if it’s been said already) but with the new free running (or parkour)-like moves in the game like running on the wall, how he hangs on the wall now, or even the sword-pencil might increase the attractiveness of the game to older players. Kind of hard to put an age group on it though..

  30. alh1997

Hi Brad! I think that FPM is a game a lot like an Animal Crossing game in the terms that anyone can play it and have fun with it. I have a 20 year old brother (also named Brad, haha) who plays it. I really enjoy FPM. But anyway…
I think that for the game that you are working on called Cutie Pants, that she should have some sort of special ability. You know, like, how Fancy Pants Man can run really fast and do awesome flips and stuff. I saw the preview to Cutie Pants and it didn’t look like she could do anything special. You give her some special power, like throwing kittens at enemies or jumping really high or infuating (I don’t think I spelled that right, oh well.) enemies or something cool like that. I think that would be pretty tight. You are doing an amazing job at your games! Keep up the good work.
Oh, and one more thing. You should submit your stuff to Nintendo. They would be really interested in it! It might even get turned into a Wii game or something. But that’s just me talking. Do what you want.

  31. Seany Pablo

Hi Brad, if you’re working on something you can’t show right now, stop and start something new. Another question report would be unnacceptable! ๐Ÿ˜ก

Report 28 should be awesome! (like all of you other ones minus this one) ๐Ÿ˜€

  32. Frubban

Yeah, a 1-minute report with allmost nothing would be enough, but i hope we at least get something

But friday isn’t over yet. Well, actually it is, at my place at least, it’s 2.45 am, so technically it’s saturday already.

Well, i agree to what X2ander said. ^^

  33. Ryan

EVERYONE!!!! instead of a report he updated the header!!!! you can use the cat if you press “a” after she jumps. She has to be pretty low to the ground though so it can do the animation.

  34. VesicalThanatos

They’re screwing with you, dudes. She’s not whippin out her kitty yet. And jeebus, by the time Report 28 comes out, the game will definitely be for adults, cuz all of us will be thirty! … jk, Brad.
