iPhone / Too Human

So I just downloaded the WordPress app for my (pre 3G) iPhone, testing it out…

Playing the Too Human demo at the moment, haven’t really heard any buzz about it on the Internet (the demo, I mean, the Internet won’t shut up about the actual game).

Wow, it’s awful. Really, really bad. I’ll have to go into it a bit more once I’m back on the computer (that is, if you guys care), but all I keep hearing about is how much better the game gets every time the press sees it again. If that’s true, then the first versions must have been absolutely atrocious…

Maybe I should make a list of all the things wrong with the game and see if any of them get fixed…

E3 ’08 aftermath

Lemme start off by apologizing to anyone who’s just came to my site to read about FPA. There’s plenty of links to FPA related content on the right… The rest of this is for those gamers out there who like to keep their eye on the industry. Really, first and foremost I’m a gamer, and I believe that the most important part of creating video games is having a love and understanding of the medium. So, I figure that posting as a gamer is just as relative to my blog as posting as a developer.

Anyways, about E3 ’08. Pretty disappointing eh? No matter what I tell myself, I still, I suppose by some terrible habit, act like E3 is still what it used to be. If you’re a serious gamer who likes to keep his eye on the gaming pipeline, E3 could be a lot like Christmas morning. In reality, it’s now about nothing more than talking numbers and bullet points for the shareholders and mainstream news outlets.

That’s really the truth of it. My inner gamer wants to claim how full of fail all 3 press conferences were, but come on, E3 isn’t what it used to be. Nintendo announced their next big thing, and if you haven’t heard about MotionPlus, I’d look into it, because it’s awesome. Aside from that, they’re being Nintendo and not announcing games until a month or two before they ship, just like Apple does.

Technically, I am part if the gaming industry, but being on this side of the fence is still pretty new to me, so I still geek out about game announcements just like I used to, so that’s why I’m even writing about it in the first place, haha. I still tend to root for Nintendo, but I have to remember that E3 in no way represents their full target audience. The E3 PRESS CONFERENCE is for the casuals, sneaky behind the scenes interviews done by gaming sites are for us ‘core gamers.’

Besides, Nintendo works on a little bit of math that goes something like this:

Casual games = $$$
$$$ = Zelda, Metroid, Mario, etc.

So as far as I’m concerned, Nintendo can make and sell as much casual software as it wants. Besides, that leaves a big empty space for other developers to fill.

Yeah… don’t really know why I choose this post to actually put that disclaimer up on… guess it finally just hit me how many people come to this site every day, and that this really is my site as well as just a blog…

E3 ’08

I tend to get far more excited about e3 (the big show where Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo all show off and announce new stuff), and no, I have nothing to show off for e3 as a developer, but as a gamer, I still can’t wait to see what Nintendo’s got up their sleeves. For those of you not scouring the internet for late breaking new, Microsoft just announced Miis for 360, to satisfy the legions of hardcore Gears of War players who complain that there is not enough of ‘teh kiddie’ on their console. Before Microsoft’s conference, Nintendo announced a new add-on to the Wii remote that allows the console to know exactly where the remote is being held, probably in case Microsoft announces a Wii-like controller (yet that was the only thing they didn’t copy…). And no, that’s not what the controller was supposed to be able to do in the first place, absolute positioning and reading tilt are two completely different things.

So yeah, Nintendo’s conference is usually the one that I look forward to most (as long as they’re not just announcing 4 player Pac-Man, that is…). I’m predicting WiiSports 2 bundled with the new MotionPlus peripheral, and there’s been rumblings of announcements of Animal Crossing Wii (it’s about time, I’d say) and Punch Out! Wii (and if that’s true, I’m positive it’ll use the TrueMotion add-on). Pikmin 3 is practically guaranteed, as is Nintendo showing at least something about a new Kid Icarus.

Might happen: TrueMotion bundled with WiiSports 2 for a good price (30 altogether? 40 at the most…), news that Nintendo actually cares about The Conduit (and a big thanks to High Voltage Software for that one), Animal Crossing Wii having some sort of ‘adventure’ single player game mode, and at least one other big ‘core’ game announcement.

Probably won’t happen but I wished it would: New awesome Star Fox game that’s a true sequel to Star Fox 64, new Zelda title that’s built from the ground up for Wii using TrueMotion, firmware update for USB MASS STORAGE SUPPORT AKA HARD DRIVES OR FLASH DRIVES for Wii downloads, a new Retro game (the guys who did the Metroid Prime trilogy), Disaster: Day of Crisis playable and almost finished, and finally: Red Steel 2 being shown off and looking as good as the first one almost was (I liked the first one a lot, the control was just terrible).

(and while I’m at it, New Super Mario Bros. 2 would rock)

So, what you guys looking forward to? Any predictions?

So…

… it’s my birthday today, 23 years here, most of those spent playing video games, the last few spent making video games.

Just thought I’d let you guys know, heh. By the way, can’t remember if I told you guys this yet or now, but I got a ton of awesome stuff in the works that I hope I can tell everyone about soon.

Q&A pt 2, site updates

Alrighty then, so I finally got around to posting the second part of the Q&A session I recorded a few months ago. Yeah, I know, trust me, I’m still dealing with a lot of post World 2 release stuff. I’ve got a lot of cool stuff brewing in the background, though, I’m trying to set up a lot of stuff that FPA fans should like. Either way, check out the ‘videos’ tab under World 2 to view part 2. I think these questions are actually pretty interesting.

While on a ‘taking care of things that I should have done a long time ago’ kick, I updated a lot of the placeholder pages to the right. Game pages now have short little blurbs about them, and links to the game if there wasn’t one before. I still need to post images and stuff like that, but it’s better.

Also, and Fairly’s been bugging me about this one, I went and put some stuff up on the About Me pages, some info, a few pictures, if there’s anything else you guys think should be up there, go ahead and yell at me in the comments.

I’m going to try to get a few new shots up of Fraser’s Ride up, also.

And back

Hey guys, I had a wedding to go to after Disney World, so I’ve been out of town for quite some time now. Not like a post so often that anyone would really notice, but hey. Anyways, you can check out the Flickr set with a handful of the pictures from the trip in it. I’ll probably post some of the funnier ones around in the forum.

Annnd, Fraser’s Ride is back in production, still a lot of work to be done until I’ll be happy with how it feels overall, but so far so good. I’m a bit worried, though, it’s more of a mellow experience of a game, not so sure about how Flash gamers will receive it. But oh well, I’m sure it’s good to diversify a bit. I’ll try to grab some screens or something once it shapes up a bit more.

Fancy Pants a fighter?

Ever since I let it slip in World 2 that Fancy Pants Man was at one point in time planned as a fighter in Newgrounds Rumble, several people have asked me to somehow get him into the game, quite a few even going so far as to suggest that I make my own fighting game! Looks like enough people ended up spamming NegativeOne’s inbox, because he finally gave in and, yes, I finished Fancy Pants Man’s sprite sheet for Rumble.

To mark Rumble’s 1 year anniversary, and incidentally, Rumble’s winning of the 2008 Newgrounds Tank award, NegativeOne and I finally got the little guy into the game. It’s a definite clash of styles, but I think he’s a lot of fun to play as. So, NegativeOne, thanks for letting FPM be a part of Rumble (and sorry about all the code I used in his moveset! haha). Also, a big thank you to MindChamber for making the menu art assets for FPM.

As a warning, Newgrounds Rumble is rated teen for mild violence, mild text, and mild adult themes. It is, after all, a fighting game based on Newgrounds characters. Play Newgrounds Rumble here.

So, there’s the latest reason why I haven’t been updating my site. Well, that and I’m at Disney World, haha.

1.6a patch

I was holding off on this to make sure everything’s right, and there were a few bugs left in the 1.5/1.6 update, but this patch should fix everything. Actually, I don’t think I mentioned the 1.6 update here, but it changes a lot of the platform and wall code so that the shell is now aware of ledges (will roll off them, bounce off them properly). I’m kind of glad that I figured that stuff out, though, I think it would work really well in the tile-based platforming engine I have lying around here somewhere…

Yeah, I know, I’m spending all my time fixing World 2 when I should be making new games. But think of it this way, if I spend so much time on the FPA engine, I pretty much have to make World 3… eventually 😉

Also, I have a really cool surprise for everyone that should be ready before the weekend 😀

(Hey, textboxes, how useful. Now I can post the embed code without the game being embedded. Have fun!)

Starting small on this one, there’s now a little art button under World 2 in the usual spot. Nothing too spectacular, but it’s a start. I figured I should leave it open to you guys to tell me what you like that’s there, or want to see/download, suggestions for desktop wallpapers or drawings, stuff like that. Go ahead and leave monitor resolutions while you’re at it, I’m running at 1920×1200, so that’s what the first wallpaper is set to, but I can make them smaller or non-widescreen if you guys need.

1.5 released!

Version 1.5 is released, gah, finally! If you’re a site hosting my game, grab the latest version from here, if there are any sites that you guys especially like, tell them to update, or give me their address and I’ll try to get ahold of them.

Next up on the to-do list: Standalone versions with full quality audio. Woo!

I’ve also been getting requests for FPA art lately, would anyone be interested in some icons, desktop wallpapers, or things like that?

1.5 Update Beta 3

If I had a dollar for every time I rewrote the snail’s bounce code…

Either way, I have a good feeling about this one, the actual bouncing should be much more accurate (the shell should act more realistically), and I think I finally got everything stable this time around (crosses fingers).

I was having some problems with the platforms, so if you guys could play around with those, hit them from weird angles, at the very corners, and play around with getting the snailshell into the hole in level 2 (this should have fixed any problems there also…), that would be a HUGE help. I’m really hoping to finally get this out there tomorrow…

Beta 3

(Oh, and just to make sure, the Best Time scores are saving properly, right?)

Ah, and one more thing you guys can tell me, are your save files carried over when I update?

1.5 Update Beta 2

Everything should be addressed, plus a lot more code rewriting that I probably didn’t need to do. The most noticeable would probably be that that mayor is animated now.

Can everyone check on getting the snailshell into the golf hole in level 2, to check and see if they have any of the problems Sahiro describes in the last comments?

[bit of an update, that should fix the springs]

1.5 Update… Beta

Alright, I need sleep, like always, and I want this update to be perfect, so here’s what’s basically the final 1.5 update. Run through it, tell me if everything works, if there’s any bugs, particularly in the platform code, and what you like and what you don’t like about what’s new (or anything simple that you think could still be addressed in the final update)…

Basically I’m letting you guys beta test the update instead of waiting until tomorrow when I can make sure that everything works. Sneaky? Oh, most definitely.

Some tips: holding s, up, or down at the title credits or when the mayor is talking when you can’t move will speed everything up. T displays the stopwatch. Get the squiggles in the boss fight after being hit to allow yourself to take one more hit than normal.

Just a note to webmasters, please don’t upload this version, it’s locked to my site. Please wait until the full update is released.

Update 1.5 Beta

Oh, right, there’s also a few new things besides what was listed in the previous posts. One in particular should be pretty sweet…

Update

Nope… update’s not ready yet, sorry…

Basically, the deal with the update is, I’m both lazy and extremely picky about my games, I’m sure you all know that by now… So it should be no surprise that I keep finding new things that I want to fix in World 2. I think I have it locked down now, so there’s really not that much more to do… you guys should be glad, though. If it was merely a bunch of bug fixes, you wouldn’t really have much of a reason to replay it. The biggest addition is the 2 more transitional levels, added after Level 3 and Level 4. I’m trying to be creative with these two, since they’re so small, I figure more thought should go into them, right? Nothing mind-blowingly amazing or anything, of course, but new content is new content, right?

There’s a few additions to the backgrounds, in Level 5 and Level 4 mostly, that I’d say are worth checking out. And don’t forget the timer… oh, and what some people would probably consider the best additions, if you hold a button while at the title menu or dialogue, it’ll speed them up. Definitely a plus if you play the game more than once.

Hopefully around the time the update gets out, I’ll have some fancy standalone players for the game, too, I’ve gotten a few requests for those…

Forum

The new forum’s been great, too, so here’s a big thanks to everyone posting and being generally awesome in the forum, and to Fairly who’s taking care of most of the admin functions there. We’re getting 108.765 average posts per day, and 5.529 average topics per day, in 2 weeks. Sounds pretty good to me.

Ah, that reminds me, I still gotta add the Forum door to the banner… but first I have to finish this update, argh.

Check out the topic rofl lmao: currently covered in cats and captions, and I approve. I want to start linking to more topics in the future, but I really haven’t had time to lurk around in my own forum lately…

I’d like to do more topics like this in the future, and build up some sort of collection of tips and how-to’s for making Flash games…

And finally, games I’m currently playing, since it would be too long to post that here…

On a completely unrelated note

You know what I hate? Those hand driers with the sensor on the front with small text that says ‘sanitary touchless’ or something like that. I mean, not once have I not rubbed my hands all over the thing looking for a sensor or button before I actually notice the small sensor in front. And gamers / developers who think online gaming is a replacement for multiplayer gaming in person, I REALLY hate that…

First real World 2 update

[update: Everything done!]

World 2 update 1.5 is fast approaching. ‘1.5’ sounds like a good version number to make substantial changes at, so I’m fixing a few problems that have popped up since the initial release, as well as spending time on a few little details that weren’t big enough to delay the game further. So basically, yes, I’m patching World 2 as if it were a retail game.

I’m posting the list because, well, if you can think of anything that you think deserves to be fixed, now’s your time to post it in the comments.

– Added a stopwatch, like World 1 on Kongregate.

– Best time displayed in trophy/colors room.

– Angry Rabbit won’t just jump over you now.

– 2 squiggles added to boss battle, getting them lets you take one more hit before dying. They’re the only squiggles that come back after you die.

-Screen blinking after loading improved… mostly…

– Added another sign about wall jumping to Level 4

– Exaggerated spiders crawling over you when you’re defeated.

– Player now needs to hold the direction away from the wall to let go a wall jump, so players switching directions with the jump won’t accidently cancel the wall jump.

– Fixed Geier’s name to match the rest in credits

– New inky walls transitional level

– New ‘ladder’ moving platforms transitional level

– fixed wall jump to ledge hang notches in the Level 5 wall that leads to the Afro Dojo

– FPM can plow through baddies now if he’s sliding or rolling fast enough (which would be faster than a run, so still no easy mass spider killing) (you guys wanted this one, no?)

– invincible for a few frames after sliding into something so if you hit two spiders that are taking up the same space, you won’t get hurt

– music on / off toggle saved after game is closed

Edit: stuff update!

– Finished Level 5 background (FINALLY, looks so much better now :D)

– option to reset game data (I’ve promised a few people this, though I’m not sure how I should implement it, I guess I can break the rules for something as important as that and make it clickable…)

– update ‘matrix backflip’ head and hair

– update getting hurt clip

– and a bunch of other little stupid things that I can’t believe got through testing, ugh

– fixed spring/baddie jump hair

– cleaned up slopes transitional level

– cleaned up duck motion lines

– Level 4 background finished, background not empty anymore, woot.

I’m hoping I can get all of this finished tomorrow in the near future…

Donations, Forum, and Portal

Well I’m getting sick of how ads work. I’m allowing people to advertise on my site and I’m only getting paid when they actually click a link? Hey, if your product isn’t interesting enough to get people to click on it, it’s your fault, not mine. I guess I could make the same complaint for MochiAds, but so many more people play World 2 than visit my site that it’s not nearly as big of a problem. I also know that those guys are working to get use developers the best deals that they can, so…

So, instead of using ads on the site, I’ve added a Donate button to the sidebar. I’m sure that most of the people who enjoy playing my games aren’t exactly able to donate through Paypal, but… they have parents, right? 😀

Also new: What I would consider the next step in expanding the site: a forum! Yep, now you guys get to post off topic comments, and off topic forum posts! (kidding, kidding! you know I love you guys’ ‘creative posting’!). WordPress names carry over to the forum, and yes, I will make a door for them… eventually…

Current categories are:

Brad Borne, Makes games, which will soon be filled with thought provoking questions such as, ‘when is World 3 going to be release?!’

Game Development: I can’t promise I’ll be able to answer everything, but I’m hoping this can turn into some sort of database for the most asked questions.

Your Work: A place to show off your own creative side. Drawings, animations, games, fan art, engine builds, music, whatever. If you made it and want to show it off, you can post it here.

Video Games (current) and Video Games (classic): I’m not too sure if I want this classification yet, not sure if I’ll stick with current and classic, or ‘reviews’ and ‘analysis,’ or something…

Music: I’ve always said that having a good beat in your head is extremely important while animating, so I’ll probably end up ranting about a bunch of bands that I like that you probably haven’t heard of.

Serious Business: There’s a few topics that I would like to talk about, not necessarily related to gaming, that I don’t think would work well as a blog post. I do plan on heavily moderating all threads under this category, but no, I won’t be censoring anyone’s opinion that differs from my own.

Off Topic: Because I know my forum would explode if you guys didn’t have this section 😉

I was going to write on Portal and it’s current seemingly endless influence on any and all online puzzle games… but instead I think I’ll go use my newfangled Forum thing to do that

Sorry Sonic…

Yep, that previous post was an April fools dealio, but since I’m lazy, I didn’t actually post it until late yesterday, so I’m going to leave that post unedited so you can still view it in all it’s splendor. I’ll leave the mock banner up for one more day also…

Figured I’d show you guys what my ‘genius’ sister did to my desktop yesterday. She was quite proud of it…
